What if you woke up to find a pile of dead kittens in your garage? The mama cat just looks at you, staring as if maybe, maybe it was your fault.
Would your mind begin to reel, drawing on old, haunting memories while trying to cling to some kind of hope?
That’s what Alyssa Durst’s story “Passing” dives into. Dead cats, heartbreak, and grief.
Alyssa’s story was the winner of The Company’s 2024 Spring Writing Contest. The prompt? “Buried.”
Without being too morbid, let’s “dig in.”
Alyssa Durst is a fiction writer who explores Christian themes for a general audience. She received her MFA from the University of New Orleans, and her work has appeared in Pithead Chapel and Blue Earth Review, among others. She lives in central Illinois with her husband and four sons.
Noah J. Matthews (the host) is an author and developmental editor dedicated to changing hearts with fiction and helping authors level up their stories. His fantasy western novella, Outlaw Blood, has both delighted readers and left them scratching their heads.
So sit back, grab a tissue and a thinking cap, and listen to a curiously beautiful piece of Kingdom literature.
