Gazing on the Sun

by Anastasia O'Donnell

Day burst upon the darkness o’er the deep,
Illuminating new-formed depth and height;
Man opened both his lights from his first sleep:
He first beheld the Light before the light.
Man turned away from Brilliance, sought his way
In trustless dusk. He cannot now return
To look upon the glory, for his gaze
Is tainted by the darkness; he’d be burned.
But knowing man could see just so much light,
The Sun came down in likeness of a star.
This gleam is comprehensible to sight;
Its strength no force of darkness e’er can mar.
The shades of men shine with the effulgence;
The Sun shall light their kingdom ever hence.
